BarCamp - The Ideal Learning Platform

Published by Ricky at 9:29 am under Events, Ideas

I attended the BarCamp held for the first time in Malaysia recently. It has been a good experience, not only because I learned a number of new things on technologies and Internet business, but most importantly I have found the best ever learning platform I have come across!

These are what I think make BarCamp stands out from other learning events:

It’s open - Anyone can propose to facilitate any topic. Anyone can choose to join any session he or she likes.

It’s participatory - BarCamp sessions are not spoon-feeding sessions. Rather, all are encouraged to participate. In fact, there is a “law of two feet” that if you can’t make a contribution by your presence, use your two feet and walk away!

It’s peer teaching - It’s no more one-way teaching. All can share and teach one another on the topic.

It’s web 2.0 - Content generated by participants. Everyone participates and contributes. Instant feedback by anyone!

It’s FREE - Last but not least!

In fact, I have been proposing something called the Internet Business Fellowship (IBF) where people come and learn from and teach one another on business, marketing and technologies.

These are my wish list for BarCamp and similar events:

  • Make it into a smaller group so that more people can participate, not just listen.
  • Make it more frequent, perhaps once a month!
  • Make it more mobile so that it can be held anywhere.
  • Make it available in other languages, such as Malay, Chinese and Tamil.
  • Make it even more participatory!

In summary, can it be made more “agile”, so that it can be held anytime, anywhere, at any frequency, in any language, and by anyone?

  1. [...] had good experience attending the first BarCamp in Malaysia and blogged about it in BarCamp - The Ideal Learning Platform.  Now they are going to have a similar one called Startup Camp in Malaysia on 22nd and 23rd [...]

I wish someone would organize a church camp like this….

Yes Friedbeef :-) I think this kind of unconference can be applied to many settings… Anyway, I think Web 2.0 is revolutionalizing not only the Internet, but businesses and even the way we live as well. We are moving towards XXX 2.0 now.

Dear Pin, thanks again for your initiative :-) I’m on for it. But may have to leave earlier as I will have dinner that day. Anyone else?

Anything we should bring besides Notebook? What are the things that we will be discussing? Getting excited, see you there, Ricky :)

I guess the next things are choosing the topics and who to share. Some suggestions are such as:

    - About Barcamp and the learning model
    - Application for preseed fund (since it’s preseed season now :-) )
    - Our individual businesses (eg your trip planning)

Anything goes. But we need a rough idea first…

Ok guys. To get things start moving, I’ll propose to share 15 minutes on my idea which I’m using to apply for MDeC pre-seed fund now. Anyone who come will get to hear about it!

Now, I know most of you have gone through the process before. So you are more experienced than me in this. Also thanks to Avijit from Enveluv for helping me out by sending his whole proposal to me to refer.

I’m also not a good presenter. So it’s basically a consultation session with you all. It’s more of listening to you than me talking. I’ll present the idea and you evaluate it. You guys and gals please help me to improve it and give me free advice! :-)

Interested to come and help me out?
