Do You Really Need So Much Hosting Space?

Published by Ricky at 10:49 am under Hosting

Nowadays, hosting providers are not only competing on price but also on disk space. It seems the bigger the space offered, the better.

From just 30 MB a few years ago, now it’s commonplace to find hosting services in terms of GB. Even to the extent of 300 GB and so-called “unlimited”.

Amazing. But do you really need so much space?

Hosting providers know that you will not need so much space. Perhaps 1% of all customers may ever use so much. So it’s ok to claim to offer 10GB, 300GB or even “unlimited space”. This is the “overselling” kind of business model.

Unfortunately, many do not allow you to share more than one web sites (add-on domains) in your shared hosting plan. What use is there to have 10GB space if you won’t use even 100MB for your single web site?

Even if your web site is highly popular and consume gigabytes of hosting space, chances are shared hosting is no longer feasible for you. Your web site will have consumed so much server resources that your hosting provider will suspend your account before you even use that much space.

So what’s the point of buying 10 GB hosting plan if you know you won’t use even 10% of it?

Let’s see how much space I’m using for my own sites here.  Do you think I will need gigabytes of server space?

bizpartner.com.my - 320 MB (inclusive of MySQL database for all sites)

nextlevel.com.my - 16 MB

nextlevel.com.sg - 17 MB

richquote.com - 5 MB

rickysoo.com - 29 MB

vesselbiz.com - 19 MB

How about you? How much space are you using? Are you overpaying for your web hosting?

Indeed. Our corporate website http://www.1.com.my is 5MB altogether :)

  3. [...] Firstly, an average web site will not use so much space.  All but one of my own sites are below 50MB each.  Check this out. [...]
